Sustainable Shipping
We run and operate ocean going vessels, and as per ship management business practices this is undertaken for and on behalf of the asset owners with Viridian Maritime acting as their managers. This naturally means that the actual requirement to be met for a sustainable way forward to achieve a ‘zero carbon’ outcome from shipping activities, relies heavily on the partners we work with and their own internal acceptance, due diligence and so forth.
However, at the same time whilst we work with our partners to review advise and build a plan for the best recourse to achieve the goal, we whilst embracing these priorities, aspire not only to meet but to exceed expectations, forging a sustainable future for our industry and leaving an indelible mark on the global pursuit of environmental responsibility. This is by no means an easy feat but remains essential and necessary.
Together, making zero carbon within the shipping a reality
At Viridian Maritime, we aim to make the Vision of zero-carbon within our business a reality.
We continuously work to focus on the following priorities:
-
People, safety, and well-being
-
Climate change and health
-
Inclusion and diversity in our workforce
-
Ocean health and biodiversity
-
Ethical business conduct and compliance
-
Ship recycling
These are a lot of words, and whilst may seem simple by reading them, putting them into action requires conscious time, effort, investment, and a belief that the results once achieved were worth it.
How do we make shipping more Sustainable
Some of the initiatives and innovations capable of driving further positive change towards sustainability in shipping:
1. Evaluating alternative fuels
Transitioning to low-carbon or zero-emission fuels is one of the most impactful ways to reduce shipping’s carbon footprint. Investing in, and encouraging the adoption of, alternative fuels could significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. Whilst there is no-one size which fits all, the industry on various fronts is currently evaluating the viability of alternate fuels.
Our experience has also been built with the team’s experience in operating dual fuel LNG vessels, as well as understanding the feasibility of using other fuels together with our clients and exploring the opportunities.
2. Optimize vessel design and efficiency
We would with our clients and partners to jointly review of hull designs, optimized propulsion systems, and integrated energy-saving technologies which could lead to substantial fuel savings and emissions reductions, making vessels more environmentally friendly.
3. Embrace digitization and data analytics
Our aim remains to progressively use data, analytics, and applicable software to optimize vessel performance. We proactively support our clients, crew, and fleet teams in making data-driven decisions to comply or even go beyond international regulations in line with our Vision.
4. Encourage collaboration
All these are new developments which are moving at breathtaking pace, one of the only ways to move forward is via collaboration, with various stakeholders – from manufacturers, OEM’s, suppliers, and the whole supply chain process. This would help create comprehensive sustainability standards, drive collective action towards common sustainability goals, and encourage the adoption of best practices.
