Lay-Up Services

Whilst most shipping markets are cyclical in nature, we fully understand why then owners deem it uneconomical to operate their vessels and consider, based on a duration, either a warm or cold lay-up of their vessels.

Our team specifically assist owners and operators alike, providing them cost effective solutions based on their time horizon and requirements, having done so for various asset classes ranging from FPSO, OSV’s to the conventional tanker and dry cargo vessels.

Our team after having evaluated; then advise the owners on the lay-up options available and procedures that need to be followed, with the objective to ensure that the asset remains preserved and her integrity is maintained during this period.

A detailed maintenance plan as well as a comprehensive assessment of requirements for the lay-up as well as the reactivation will be provided.

More importantly, when the times comes for the asset to be reactivated post lay-up, it is done so in the most cost-effective manner enabling the asset to technically operate as per the client’s requirements.

When choosing to take your ship out of service, it is important that these additional points are into consideration prior deciding the best way forward.

Warm Lay-Up

  • In warm lay-up, the vessel is typically taken out of service for anything ranging from 3 to 12 months, depending also what the forward-looking charter market horizon shows.
  • In warm lay-up, machineries is kept in operation for the sole reason of a faster re-commissioning, as the market upticks and there are commercial opportunities or trading the vessel.
  • During the warm lay-up, measures may be taken to optimize various operational costs, such as reducing the crew manning levels below the statutory requirements

Choosing this option is ideal for shorter market turnarounds, as the is kept in a fully functional state and ready for employment.

Cold Lay-Up

  • An option to consider is to also use shore power (if the vessel is at a shipyard) or a deck generator, to further preserve the asset and manage costs.
  • As for personnel, only minimum is provided covering requirement for fire watches, leakages, moorings tended to and security watches is maintained.
  • This option involves more complex and broader measures compared to a warm lay-up, such as steps to prevent corrosion (dehumidification) and ensure protection of the vessel’s tanks, compartments etc. and more.
